Bowel Screening

Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland after lung and breast cancer. Every year almost 4,000 people are diagnosed with the disease. For men the risk of getting colorectal cancer over the age of 50 is 1 in 18 (5.5%) and for women the equivalent risk is 1 in 22 (4.5%). The overall uptake rate for the bowel screening programme in Scotland is 52% for men and 58% for women

The Scottish Bowel Screening Programme invites all men and women in Scotland between the ages of 50 to 74 for screening every two years. They are invited by a letter being sent to the address that is registered with the practice (if you change address please inform the practice as soon as possible). Once you are in the age band, you will be recalled during the same month every 2 years until you reach 75.

All the GP’s in the practice support this service and would like as many patients as possible to send back their screening kit. If we are advised that you have not done this we will send you a letter just to remind you of the importance. Don’t worry if you have mislaid your kit you can obtain another by contacting:

Scottish Bowel Screening Helpline 0800 0121 833
